Pippa Dickinson - Tour of Champsaur Valley Self-Guided Hiking Adventure

June 2025

Overview

We thoroughly enjoyed our six days' walking in the thrilling landscapes of the French alpine foothills. We went in June and the flowers were fantastic. The routes were well-planned, varied and easy to follow; the navigation app worked fine. Sound boots, walking sticks and a tolerance for heights are all recommended. We did not meet another foreigner all week and had plenty of opportunity to practice our French. Everything was within the capabilities of two moderately-fit sixty-plus-year-olds. Supplied maps and well-marked paths allowed us to extend our walking if we wished to. The accommodation was standard but agreeable, the food generally good and servings generous. One of the best tests of a company is how they react if things go wrong. When our booked taxi to Gap station failed to show on our final day, Undiscovered Mountains had a replacement with us in twenty minutes, and a reserve taxi waiting on the station forecourt, ready to take us down to Marseille at the company's expense if we missed our train. We made it comfortably. Towering crags, soaring raptors, tumbling cascades, staggering views and the reassurance of good support. We're coming back for more.
