  • Tips for the guide

The Haute Route ski tour from Chamonix to Zermatt is the most famous ski tour in the Alps, known for its stunning scenery and unique ski descents. There are several versions of this tour and this route via Bourg-Saint-Pierre follows part of the original path, enhancing its prestigious reputation. It is more demanding and technical than the classic Verbier route, the traverse on the southern side of the Grand Combin, adding a truly wild and alpine character to the tour. There are sections where crampons and ice axes will be used and where the guide will rope together skiers.

Over the tour you will cover 95km and 6800m of ascent over 6 ski touring days staying hut to hut in high mountain refuges along the way. You will traverse the Alps at altitudes of between 2500m and 3500m with the possibility of summiting the Pigne d'Arolla 3790m

Highlights of the trip:

  • A much less crowded tour than the classic Haute Route and far more alpine.
  • Crossing the Sonadon Pass from the Valsorey hut with a stunning atmosphere.
  • Ascending the Pigne d'Arolla via the Brenay Glacier, a magnificent and rarely travelled stage.
  • Ascending the Tête de Valpelline on the final day.
  • Your guide(s):

    Your guide(s) for this trip are fully qualified UIAGM high mountain guides, which is the highest qualification for professional mountaineers possible in Europe. To gain this qualification, they need to be highly proficient skiers and mountaineers themselves and are trained and tested in all aspects of mountain safety over several years before obtaining the qualification.  They will have your safety as their top priority. This can sometimes mean making difficult decisions such as abandoning, turning back or changing the itinerary and we ask that you respect the decisions of the guides on this trip. Some of our guides are also qualified ski instructors which is an additional asset for tips and guidance to help you improve your skiing technique. The guide ratio we use for this trip is a maximum of 6 skiers per guide.

    Who will love this trip?

    This tour is perfect for experienced and adventurous skiers who thrive on technical challenges.

    Technical Enthusiasts:

    • Ideal for those who enjoy steep ascents and descents, using skis, crampons, rope, and ice axe.
    • Suitable for skiers who have previously tackled ski tours and are comfortable on 45° slopes, such as the ascent to the Sonadon Pass.
    • Perfect for those with summer mountaineering experience, which will be a significant advantage on this tour.

    Physically Fit Adventurers:

    • For individuals in excellent physical condition, ready for elevation gains of 800 to 1300 m and days lasting 6 to 8 hours.

    If you love a challenge and have a strong background in ski touring and mountaineering, this trip offers an unparalleled adventure. When you book, we will ask for your previous ski touring  experience to ensure you meet the required level. If you do not meet the required level, the guide may ask you to leave the tour at the beginning of the week and unfortunately we would not be able to refund you in this situation.
