  • Tips for the guide

This guided Arolla to Zermatt ski tour is a superb high mountain journey through one of the most dramatic sections of the classic Haute Route. Starting in the quiet Swiss village of Arolla, you’ll travel hut-to-hut through glaciated alpine terrain, crossing remote cols, sleeping in atmospheric mountain refuges and finishing in world-famous Zermatt beneath the Matterhorn.

Over four ski touring days, the route links some of the great huts of the Valais Alps: Cabane des Dix, Cabane des Vignettes and Cabane de Bertol. These huts sit high among glaciers and peaks, giving the trip a real expedition feel without needing to commit to the full Chamonix to Zermatt Haute Route.

The journey begins with the ascent from Arolla towards Cabane des Dix, before continuing deeper into the alpine world towards Cabane des Vignettes. From there, you traverse towards Cabane de Bertol, one of the most dramatic hut locations on the Haute Route, before the final stage towards Zermatt.

In good conditions, the last day is a magnificent finale: a high glaciated traverse, a climb towards Tête Blanche, and a long descent into Zermatt with the Matterhorn dominating the horizon.

This is a serious high mountain ski tour for experienced ski tourers with strong off-piste ability, previous mountain experience and a high level of fitness. You’ll travel through glaciated terrain, carry a pack, manage long days at altitude and ski variable snow conditions. In return, you get one of the most rewarding sections of the Haute Route: remote huts, big mountain scenery and the unforgettable descent into Zermatt beneath the Matterhorn.

    Your guide(s):

This trip is led by fully qualified UIAGM high mountain guides, the internationally recognised standard for professional guiding in the Alps.

To qualify, UIAGM guides complete several years of demanding training and assessment in ski touring, mountaineering, glacier travel, avalanche safety, rope work, navigation and rescue techniques. They are highly experienced skiers and alpinists, with the judgement needed to lead groups through serious high mountain terrain.

Your safety is their top priority. On a route like Arolla to Zermatt, conditions can change quickly, so your guide may need to adapt the itinerary, choose an alternative route, turn back or end the tour early. We ask all participants to respect these decisions.

Some of our guides are also qualified ski instructors, which can be a great bonus for tips on technique and efficiency in variable snow.

Maximum ratio: 6 skiers per guide.

    Who will love this holiday

This ski tour is for experienced ski tourers with a strong mountain background, or excellent off-piste skiers who already have alpinism experience and want to take on a classic high alpine hut-to-hut journey.

You should have a high level of fitness and be comfortable with long days in the mountains, including sustained ascents, glacier travel, early starts and variable snow conditions. Previous experience using skins, touring bindings, avalanche safety equipment and crampons is essential.

This is a great choice if you want the atmosphere and challenge of the Haute Route, but prefer a shorter itinerary focused on one of its most spectacular sections: the journey from Arolla to Zermatt.

You will love this trip if you enjoy remote mountain environments, simple hut accommodation, physical challenge, technical progression and the satisfaction of travelling through serious alpine terrain under your own power. It is also a fabulous tour to do before committing to a more technical and committed version of the haute route.

This trip is not suitable for beginner ski tourers, piste-only skiers or off-piste skiers without mountain experience. You need to be confident skiing in variable off-piste conditions while carrying a pack, and able to keep moving efficiently for several consecutive days at altitude.

    Sustainability

This holiday uses existing mountain huts and local valley services, helping support hut guardians, guides, hotels and small alpine communities in the Val d’Hérens and Zermatt valleys.

The route itself is human-powered: once on the mountain, you travel by ski, using skins, gravity and your own energy to cross the landscape. The recommended travel plan also works well by public transport, with train access to Sion, bus connections to Arolla and train travel from Zermatt at the end of the trip.

Zermatt is car-free, which makes the train the most practical and lower-impact way to leave the resort after the tour. Guests who drive can leave their car in Sion and use public transport at both ends of the route, avoiding the need for a long private transfer back to Arolla.
