A week of alpine paddling with qualified instructors to guide you on the rivers and improve your kayaking skills. Explore the rivers of the Southern French Alps against a backdrop of dramatic mountain scenery, clear water and sunshine!
Location: Southern French Alps
Months available: May, June, July, August
The Southern French Alps is famous for its white water and kayakers from all over the world come here to sample its alpine rivers with stunning mountain scenery. From grade II to grade V all within an hour of each other, there is a huge amount of choice in a relatively small space!
The week will start with an intensive session on the grade II /III Drac river. This will give you and the instructor the opportunity to gauge your level and plan the rest of the week accordingly. After the first session your instructor will plan an itinerary to make the most of the local rivers, show you the best play spots and push you to your potential. A great way to explore the rivers of the Southern Alps in all their glory and have lots of fun!
If there are mixed abilities within the group we will split you into smaller groups (average of four per group) by ability and create a programme to try and accommodate everyone - logistics dependent!! This may mean going to the same river but paddling different sections of it.
Paddle the Drac Noir (grade IV), the Drac Blanc (grade III+), the Drac (grade II - IV), the Severaisse (grade III - IV), the Bonne (grade IV - VI), the Souloise (grade IV), all draining the snow and glacier melt from the largest mountains in the Southern Alps in the Ecrins National Park. Or travel a little further for the Durance (II - IV), the Ubaye (grade III - IV) or the Guil (grade III - IV).
All our kayak instructors are fully qualified to French and European standards. They are very experienced kayakers with lots of local knowledge and will have a keen eye on your safety.
For your free day you also have three activity points that you can use for a range of activities including canyoning, via ferrata, rock climbing, horse riding... and many more. A great opportunity to try some of the other fabulous activities the Alps has to offer!
Have a look at our kayaking kit list for advice on what to pack.
The nearest train station is Gap. Gap is on the SNCF train service which has links from Paris (overnight sleeper), Valence, Grenoble or Marseille.
The nearest airports are Grenoble, Lyon and Marseille, both approximately 2.5hrs drive from us here in the Alps.
Please note, for river shuttles you may need to use your car in addition to the instructor's transport. This will be the case where you only have 1 instructor for your group. You would only have 1 instructor for your group if your group is 4 or less people.
As such, you may need to hire a car or drive down in your own vehicle. We highly recommend you self drive rather than let us drive you to and from the activities. The area has so much to offer and for you to explore in your free time and public transport is limited. Check out our partner's hire car rates.
For larger groups, we can arrange transfers from Gap train station to your accommodation for 50€ per transfer (up to 8 people per transfer) and can use our own transport for river shuttles.
