Penny Caldwell - Cross Country Skiing in the Southern French Alps
February 2026
Overview
Sally arranged a very interesting cross country skiing group for our club in the Hautes Alpes région of France, an area unknown to many British skiers. The mountain scenery in this area is truly magnificent!
We stayed in Guillestre with a choice of lodging and each day two instructors took us out to ski in nearby villages where there were cross country ski tracks, classic and skating, of varying difficulty. Instruction was given 'on the go'. Each day we could choose between classic or skating and we were given plenty of time for lunch in a restaurant. Very French !
A big dump of snow mid-week made our uphill route to a refuge for lunch very challenging as our tracks had been filled in and it became more like off-track skiing. But we made it!
It was an amazing holiday and I would like to return to Undiscovered Mountains to experience more cross country skiing in such a beautiful and far less-commercialised skiing area than many of the larger ski resorts in France.
