A memorable adventure through the heart of the Alps with a local expert

This wonderful refuge to refuge walk is one of the classic tours in the Ecrins National Park, one of the most spectacular areas in France, and one of the best ways to fully experience the Southern French Alps!

The guided version of this tour allows you to have a guide with you each day, who will tell you all about this stunning area as well as about the abundant local wildlife: eagles and vultures, chamois and ibex, roe deer and wild boar, and of course the dozens of marmots which populate the area all spring and summer long!

Depending on which season you come in, you will also discover an amazing variety of wild flowers: gentians, orange lilies, orchids, daffodils, the whole scenery is absolutely magic in June and July - and if you come later in the season, most flowers will be gone but the splendid colors of the fall will make your daily walks as enjoyable!

Six nights, seven days and a thousand pictures!

The area's diversity of landscapes is quite amazing, from the awe inspiring summits of the Valgaudemar Valley (nicknamed the Little Himalayas) to the gentle alpine meadows of the Champsaur Valley. You will see majestic snow-capped peaks, such as the Sirac and its 3440 meters, high mountain passes, roaring torrents of pristine alpine water coming down from the neighbouring glaciers and spectacular rock formations and geology: make sure your bring a large capacity SD card in your camera, as you will want to stop every five minute to immortalise all these amazing sites!

All along the way, the paths are well marked and easy to follow - some sections are quite steep but all in all, the walk is easy and safe, albeit relatively long on some days, with daily average ascents of 600 meters and up to 1150 meters when you go over the 3 cols of the Vallonpierre day. We recommend a good level of fitness and walking experience. Make sure you wear good and comfortable walking shoes, as a pair of trainers won't do! You can have a look at our walking kit list for help with packing.

We take care of everything; you just enjoy!

We will make the reservations for your party at each refuge or gîte and will transfer your luggage where possible between the accommodations so you don't need to worry about heavy bags: just take what you need for the day! The longest you will be without a bag transfer is the one night you'll spend at the Vallonpierre refuge.

In terms of route guidance, we can send the several 1:25000 IGN professional hiking maps you need for the tour to your address when you book,so you can start studying your route, or we'll give them to you when we come meet&greet you before the beginning of your tour, and you will look at your day-to-day itinerary with your guide. Several routes are possible so it is up to you to decide with your guide's advice which ones to follow!

The classic route takes 5 days and 6 nights, but we can tailor-make the tour to any of your wishes, if you'd like to include a rest day for example. Just let us know when you enquire!
